Instructor: Lydia Sturby, Maachi-Waapikwaniiw

Join Lydia for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to create your very own ribbon skirt — a garment rich with history, identity, and pride within Métis culture. Guided by traditional teachings and supported by historical research, we’ll explore the meaning behind ribbon skirts, their long-standing presence in Métis communities, and the ways they continue to connect us to our ancestors and homeland.

During this class, you’ll learn how to measure, cut, and sew your skirt, along with tips for shaping the traditional flared silhouette as an option. We’ll also talk about the symbolism of colours and ribbons, and how each skirt can tell a personal story. All skill levels are welcome — from complete beginners to experienced creators.

All materials are included. Patterns, fabrics, and ribbon colours will vary, allowing you to choose from pre made combinations that reflect your own style and connection to culture.
Come create something beautiful, meaningful, and uniquely yours, while honouring the women who came before us and keeping this proud tradition alive.
